Crews are the basic unit of social organization. Anyone with Narrow experience in all of the piracy puzzles and sea battle, PoE, and the deed to a ship can make themselves a crew. (Exception: On a new Ocean, the requirements are Narrow experience at two puzzles [bilge and swordfighting] and a ship deed. Currently, only Ice has these reduced requirements.) On doubloon oceans, the cost to create a crew is ten doubloons. Crew members will need to purchase appropriate badges as well.

People in a crew can board each other's ships and go pillaging and take other voyages together. There are six permanent ranks (in addition to the temporary rank of jobber), described in the pages linked at right. Each rank gives all of the powers of the previous rank[s] as well as extra abilities.

A crew with sufficient fame may create a Flag, which can be used to unite several crews.

[edit] Crew Etiquette

The rules for crew behavior vary from flag to flag. Basic politeness—don't spam the /crew channel, don't steal from the crew or other crew members, etc.--is generally expected.

Also, just because you can board any ship in your crew doesn't mean that you should. Having people pop onto and off of a ship unexpectedly can have negative and costly side effects and make the OiC of that ship quite upset at you. When in doubt, ask over the /crew channel before boarding. (The common abbreviation "ptb" stands for "permission to board", as in "ptb Dear Anchovy?"
