Sword

From Puzzle Pirates

Swords are used any time two or more players sword-fight. Sword-fights occur in battles while pillaging, when one pirate challenges another to a sword-fight, at brawls in inns or ships, during sword fighting tournaments, or when fighting skellies.

All players start with a foil, but other swords can be purchased at iron mongers. Each sword has a different drop pattern that determines what blocks will be sent to an opponent when a player is fighting. All drop patterns have advantages and disadvantages, but some are better than others. Sword color can also slightly vary drop patterns on some swords. Swords with non-symetrical patterns can be "reversed"--if these swords have a blue, green or purple guard, then the sword will use a mirror image of the drop pattern. Players often select swords based on their style of sword-fighting. Not all swords may be wielded by all levels of players.

All swords (except the special box-set backsword) decay like most other in-game inventory items. When your last sword decays, it is replaced with a stick.

[edit] "Best" Swords

Opinions on which swords are the best vary. Most consider the skull dagger and scimitar to be among the best swords in the game. Many also considered the falchion to be a contender for best sword. Robertdonald thought there were four "best swords" in the game--the above three and the reversed saber--while others consider the saber to be an inferior sword.

One should note that this only applies to PvP swordfights. NPPs/skellies largely ignore the swordtype during swordfights. Some of the Ringers have stated that the bots do not actually play the swordfighting game--they only use simplified calculations to approximate playing the game. The Ringers have stated that NPPs do pay attention to color distribution (i.e., "How many red blocks? How many yellow..." etc.) but it is unknown how sword drops are calculated on the bots' puzzle boards. For this reason, some players use swords with nearly even color distribution (e.g., the rapier) versus NPPs and consider swords with poor color distribution (like the stick, which tends to have strikes consisting mostly, if not exclusively, of only one color) to be a very poor choice for fighting NPPs.
